The challenge

A shell course was welded in a position exceeding ASME VIII tolerances. Cutting and re-welding meant cost and, above all, missing the delivery date. It had to be determined, with grounds, whether the equipment could enter service as built.

Scope

  • Dimensional survey of the deviation and of the vessel design conditions
  • Fitness-for-service assessment to API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1
  • Stress analysis of the deviated zone against the acceptance criteria
  • Fitness report with conclusions and operating conditions
  • Prepared / Reviewed / Approved chain within the client's document system

How we worked

Code before opinion. The decision rested on the API 579 procedure, not on a workshop judgement.

Lead time as a requirement. The assessment was organised to close in ten days, before the dispatch date.

Result

Fit for service, delivered on time

The vessel was declared fit for service: the cost of cutting and re-welding the shell was avoided and the equipment shipped on schedule.
